Q Without U: The Scrabble Words That Break the Rule

7 min readSeptember 19, 2026By The Letter Smash Team

No tile causes more panic than the Q. It is worth a fat 10 points, but the schoolbook rule says Q always needs a U — and if you have no U, that big tile just sits on your rack bleeding points. The good news: the rule is not absolute. A handful of valid words let you play the Q with no U at all.

Why These Words Exist

Most Q-without-U words are borrowings from other languages — Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese — where the Q sound does not pull a U along with it. Word-game dictionaries accept them, which turns a dreaded tile into a scoring opportunity. Legality varies slightly between the Scrabble and Words With Friends word lists, so always trust the game you are actually playing.

The Ones Worth Memorizing

You do not need all of them — just the short, high-frequency ones that come up again and again:

QI — life force in Chinese philosophy (the single most useful Q word).
QAT — a leafy shrub that is chewed as a stimulant.
QOPH — a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
QANAT — an underground irrigation channel.
QINDAR / QINTAR — units of Albanian currency.
FAQIR · SHEQEL — longer words that also skip the U.

QI Is Your Best Friend

If you learn only one, learn QI. It is a two-letter word, so it plays parallel to existing tiles for multiple crossing words, and it dumps the Q instantly. Land the Q on a premium letter square and QI alone can score double digits. It is the reason experienced players stop fearing the Q entirely.

When You Do Have the U

Of course, the classic QU words still score big — QUIZ, QUAY, QUART, QUOTA, QUEEN. But knowing the U-free escapes means a missing U never strands you. Keep both sets in mind and the Q becomes one of your most valuable tiles rather than a liability.

Find Your Q Play Instantly
